Yen Press Goes Online with Yen Plus – Free Trial

With scanlation websites coming under the mighty iron hammer of inevitability, Yen Press has stepped up and offered a very reasonably priced alternative.

The San Diego Comic Con is here, and with it comes the big news: the new digital version of Yen Plus is here!!

We’re kicking off the August issue in a major way, making it available to everyone as a free trial.  If you like what you see, you can begin subscribing for just $2.99 per month with the September issue.  September’s also going to be important because that’s when we start rolling out the Japanese side of our content.  We can’t spill the beans just yet on exactly what that will include — but we can say that a certain little green-haired girl will be gracing our pages for the first time!

If you’d like to get a quick look at all the fantastic content we’ve got lined up for you in our August inaugural issue, you can click here for the full title list.  Or you can just cut to the chase and click here to sign up for your free preview!

If you’ve got feedback, let us know in the comments below, and let the dawn of the Yen Plus digital era begin!

Having tested out the service myself I can inform you that issue 1 has a single chapter from eight individual manga alongside a fanart section and a feedback column, all for $2.99. Sure it’s not up-to-date by Japanese standards and not all of the books will be to everybody’s liking but it’s still a fantastic deal when you look at the pages to pennies ratio. If you’re still not convinced then let me put it into perspective. Marvel’s most recent digital release included 33 comics. These comics only covered 9 separate series. The most up-to-date title was from 2007. Issues are roughly 24 pages of story and cost $1.99 each.

Like many people I want to see digital and print comics helping each other, not competing, and Yen Press really could be onto a winner with Yen Plus. Reading the latest chapters for a measly subscription fee and then purchasing the books that are worth a second read? That is how we move forward with digital distribution.
