Details Revealed for Fallout: New Vegas – All Roads
Fallout has been at the top of my ‘videogames I’d like to see as comics’ list for a very long time. I’ve often fantasized about what creative team I’d like on such a project. If I had my way I’d probably have Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible) writing and Ricardo Burchielli (DMZ) on pencils. I know I’m never going to get that comic, but as it turns out I am going to get this one, courtesy of Dark Horse.
Fallout New Vegas is the most recent videogame to get the comic book treatment in the form of Fallout: New Vegas – All Roads. Senior designer Chris Avellone is on writing duty which can only mean good things for this original graphic novel (OGN). The pros of having a writer who has helped shape the world of Fallout: New Vegas far outweigh the cons of having someone new to the ways of comic writing on the book. The story is set two weeks before the game and is about 2 characters hunting the player character. Interestingly enough Wellinton Alves (Marvel Zombies, Nova) and Jean Diaz (Incorruptible, Irredeemable) are both on the art, alternating between the perspectives of the 2 main characters. Perhaps even more interesting is that events in the comic have repercussions in the game.
If you read the graphic novel, you’ll see the results of many of the events, locations, and fates of the characters in the comic in primary and secondary locations in the game – as well as characters you’ll encounter in these locations. You’ll have a glimpse of their motivations and struggles before you meet them, and it’ll give larger context to their actions and how to deal with them. If you’re careful in your exploration, you’ll even find some items they left behind as well – whether the characters are alive or dead.

This OGN will not be found on shelves and instead will be released in a collectors edition boxset along with the game itself, due for release October 19th. Not an issue for most gamers who no doubt feel like they are getting a freebie with their game, but for someone like myself who isn’t entirely sold on New Vegas but would love a Fallout comic like it was his first-born I don’t know if I’m willing to risk the $80 collectors edition cover price (probably £59.99 UK equivalent) for a game that’s the secondary reason for my purchase and a book that may very well be a lot of poo.
